"A heavy "Spirit" for Depeche Mode
Tuesday afternoon, a dozen journalists were allowed to listen to all the songs of the new and 14th album from Depeche Mode due out on 17th March. Sony Music gave us the opportunity at Dan Lacksman's Synsound Studio (remembered as a remixer a song of the English group back in the day.)
After signing a NDA contract stipulating that we could talk "in detail" but simply "to give a general sense" before the deadline of February 21, we could taste Spirit in perfect sound conditions. And this is important because these 12 new songs are absolutely monstrous from a sound point of view. James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco (Foals, Florence & the Machine, Arctic Monkeys) gave Depeche Mode what the band wanted: a heavy and dark album at the same time. This album is truly supersonic, more powerful than Delta Machine which was however already strong. Engaged words (a rare occurrence at DM, like in the first single "Where's the Revolution") are mixed with lyrics about sentimental rupture.
A powerful breath, torn voices, techno beats, very deep house, heavy synths ... Everything transports the group into a new dimension, very innovative for a formation that has never been content to rest on its laurels and its glorious past . The visuals - videos and scene - are once again done by Anton Corbijn. The album will in any case be a historic tour, the first leg starting this spring, as of May 5 in Stockholm, will bring together 1.5 million people in 34 concerts in 21 countries.
