Depeche Mode's return to Metro Detroit on Thursday night for its first show in eight years was certainly worth the wait at DTE Energy Music Theatre.

Frontman Dave Gahan and pal Martin Gore delivered with a electro/synthpop party that sent fans back to the late 80s and early 90s when these English trailblazers owned the pop charts.

Check out above photos from the show - Depeche Mode's first on its North American tour - and the 21-song setlist below it used during its energetic and highly creative two-hour show.

Gahan, 51, set the tone right as he twirled around the stage to a variety of light displays; he even appeared to use the mic stand at one point as some kind of martial arts weapon.

"Oh c'mon now, you can do better than that," yelled Gahan, as the song "Personal Jesus" began to wind down. "One more!"

Depeche Mode clearly has more to give its fans in an era of music that seems to live up to the cliche that "what's old is new again."

The types of hypnotic rhythms this group created decades ago seemed to have popped up again in a variety of genres - even rap and hip hop.

Gahan and Gore clearly enjoy staying relevant and working together.

They along with keyboardist Andy Fletcher constantly gave each other encouragement in the form of warm embraces and high fives.

As expected, the classic songs like "Policy of Truth," "Enjoy the Silence," "Personal Jesus" and "Just Can't Get Enough" drew the most praise.

But newer tunes like "Soothe My Soul" and "Should Be Higher," fresh off Depeche Mode's new Delta Machine album, also earned plenty of respect from primarily middle-aged crowd.

Gahan seemed to enjoy taking the Depeche Mode faithful back in time.

"Do you know this song?," Gahan screamed as he kicked off "Just Can't Get Enough." "Do you know all the words?"

Most of the crowd certainly appeared to. It sure felt refreshing to see some legends reinvigorate our memories and create so many more.

There's no telling what Depeche Mode is capable of doing next.

Gahan, Gore and Fletcher spearhead a diverse, eclectic and constantly evolving creative effort that's still relevant and should stay that way for a long, long time.
