Depeche Mode fans got “the full Gahan” on Sunday night at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre.
That would be lead singer Dave Gahan, the dazzling, chiseled, heavily tattooed, eye makeup-and-nail polish wearing 51-year-old frontman of the British synth-pop group who have sold more than 100 million albums and singles since their formation in 1980.
Let’s put it this way: If there isn’t a Dave Gahan work out tape, there should be, judging from his upper body definition showed off to great effect as he took off his blazer, and eventually his vest, to dance, twirl, thrust his hips and stradle and spin with his microphone stand for two hours.
He was a compelling performer and it was hard to take your eyes off of him from the very first moment he walked on stage and lifted his hand in the air with flamenco-style flourish.
Playing to a sold out crowd of 16,000 fans, the group — rounded out by original members singer-keyboardist-guitarist Martin Gore and keyboardist Andrew Fletcher, both 52, plus a touring drumer and keyboardist-bassist — opened with the new songs Welcome To My World and Angel from their 2013 album, Delta Machine.
As usual for a Depeche show, striking visuals danced across an enormous video screen all night long — everything from geometric shapes to naked women in contortionist positions — and five impressive looking circular lighting rigs spun their magic.
But it wasn’t until the first classic ‘90s song, Walking In My Shoes, that the crowd came fully on board and stayed with the band for the rest of the night.
Spontaneous singalongs after songs ended were common place and Gahan — who left the stage twice to let Gore take over on lead vocals on the new song, The Child Inside, and older songs But Not Tonight and Home — encouraged such outpourings of affection, literally conducting the crowd from the stage.
“It’s like a musical,” joked Gore, as he got audience accompaniment on But Not Tonight.
“Very nice. We knew we could really count on you,” added Gahan.
The crowd also clapped along happily to Precious, danced to highlights like Policy Of Truth, A Question of Time, Just Can’t Get Enough, and sang along loudly to notable numbers Enjoy the Silence, Personal Jesus, and Never Let Me Down Again. Fans leaned in for slower, more intense and powerful songs like Black Celebration, Barrel Of a Gun, A Pain that I’m Used To, and I Feel You.
In total, Delta Machine was represented by a half-dozen tunes and while members of the audience clearly came to hear the Depeche back catalogue, which holds up so well after all this time, they also appeared open to the new material — a testament to the group’s continuing vitality.
Some 33 years after their formation, it appears Depeche Mode fans still can’t get enough.
