Maybe the “Personal Jesus” video colored the song’s sound, but for a moment I thought Depeche Mode would evolve into a cowboy band. Not a country band, but an act with a David Lynchian, Spaghetti Western feel. (That reverb and twangy guitar riff did a number on me.)

Well, DM frontman Dave Gahan has somehow become an act with a David Lynchian, Spaghetti Western feel. For “Angels & Ghosts,” his second teaming with English electronic duo Soulsavers, he begins with that reverb and a guitar that shimmers in the desert heat. “Shine” frames Gahan’s voice with earthy tones, red-dirt rock and raw organ.

Across nine tracks, that same guitar shines, that same organ lights the way. Alongside the instrumentation, Gahan cries out for redemption like the Lizard King with less self-­absorbed pathos. The man’s voice constantly recalls his iconic band while the music tugs the aesthetic back to an organic warmth — you’d never hear the big guitar solo in “Tempted” in a Depeche Mode song.

Now that Gahan has made the best album of his career, how about a 2016 DM LP that’s equally inspired?
