Egy sokkal pozitívabb Angels&Ghosts kritika az amnplify.com.au oldalról

2015. október 27. - Szigi.
Soulsavers were formed by producers Rich Machin and Ian Glover in 2003 and Angels & Ghosts is their 5th studio album.  Over the years they have collaborated with several guest vocalists including Mike Patton, Will Oldham, Mark Lanegan and Dave Gahan. On their last album, The Light The Dead See, Gahan wrote all of the lyrics and theDepeche Mode frontman is back again on vocal duties for Angels & Ghosts.
There is definitely a strong blues influence on the new album, from the guitars to the use of a gospel choir that works perfectly with Gahan’s vocals and bears a strong resemblance to Depeche Mode’s early nineties classic, Songs of Faith and Devotion (without the outrageous hedonism). The opening track and first single, Shine careens out of the speakers onto a desolate highway with a catchy delta blues bottleneck stomp holding it together. Gahan is firmly holding the reins on this one and the backing vocals compliment it nicely. The pace is slowed down on You Owe Me andGahan switches from preacher to a snarling provocateur with the line “when lights go up a hand comes down”.

All Of This And Nothing is the latest single from Angels & Ghosts and is nothing short of perfection. Lyrically, Gahan is in familiar territory here with redemption being a popular theme throughout Depeche Mode’s back catalogue. As the chorus swells and the strings kick in, the line “I’m all of this and nothing, I’m the dirt beneath your feet” hits hard and I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. Soulsavers have done a wonderful job with the musical arrangement on this track and for me it is the highlight of the album. An eerie piano chord ushers in One Thing where Gahan deliberates existentialism (with a subtle nod to Bowie’s Life on Mars) and on Lately he is reminiscing about the past as his conscience is slowly starting to unwind. The Last Time has a dreamlike Lynchian quality to it that lingers well after the song has finished and is one of the hidden gems on Angels & Ghosts.

Inviting Dave Gahan back for a second album was a sound decision by the Soulsavers as they both have truly found their feet with this record. Gahan’s songwriting has gone from strength to strength over the last 10 years and his ongoing collaboration with Soulsavers has opened up creative doors for both of them. Angels & Ghosts is out on the 23rd of October.
